Light & Shadow

myRRSstory: John Weatherby

At Really Right Stuff, we believe in celebrating the photographers, educators, and explorers who embody the same values that drive our gear—precision, intention, and a deep respect for the craft. Our #myRRSstory film series highlights these creators and the journeys that shape their work.

Master V.2.00_00_44_07.Still007Our latest film features John Weatherby, a full-time landscape photographer and educator whose story began not in a remote canyon or mountaintop—but in a college internship, behind a desk. While working in digital marketing, John picked up a camera to help with social content and quickly found himself drawn to the creative process. That spark soon turned into a passion. He began studying light and composition, investing in better tools, and exploring the world around him through a new lens.

By 2015, John launched Weatherby Photography and started building a name for himself through vivid landscapes, striking cityscapes, and commercial work that stood out for its precision and depth. But the turning point came when John decided to reimagine what life and work could look like. He converted a Sprinter van into a mobile creative studio and took his work on the road—embracing the open landscape as both inspiration and workspace.

Today, John’s life is built around freedom, movement, and creative discipline. His days are shaped by where the light falls, what weather rolls in, and how a landscape reveals itself over time. He spends much of the year exploring Iceland, Norway, and the American West, leading workshops that help others find their voice in photography and encouraging a slower, more intentional approach to creating.

His work reflects that same thoughtfulness. Whether standing beneath a frozen sky in Iceland or watching shadows move across a canyon wall, John’s images invite you to pause—to not just see the landscape, but feel present within it. At the heart of his journey is a clear commitment to living with purpose. It’s about choosing the road less traveled, not just for the views, but for the opportunity to build a life aligned with passion. That mindset—quiet, steady, and self-directed—is what makes John’s story so resonant. It’s a reminder that creativity thrives not only with tools and technique, but with time, patience, and the courage to define success on your own terms.
