At Really Right Stuff, we celebrate the adventurous spirit and precision that drive the people who use our gear. That’s why we created the #myRRSstory film series—to highlight the unique journeys of photographers, hunters, and adventurers who embody the passion and expertise we value. In this installment, we introduce James Yates, a Wyoming native whose path from rock climbing to bowhunting showcases resilience, adaptability, and a love for the outdoors.
James grew up in a family that lived and breathed the wilderness. With a father who was an avid outdoorsman, James’s early life was defined by days spent fishing and hunting in the vast landscapes of Wyoming. At just 12 years old, he killed his first deer, sparking a lifelong passion for hunting that would continue to grow and evolve.
For years, James pursued rock climbing with an intensity that took him to high alpine rock faces around the world. As a semi-professional climber, his dedication and focus were unmatched. However, two climbing injuries changed his trajectory, forcing him to shift his energy from scaling mountains to stalking game. That’s when he picked up a bow, diving headfirst into the world of archery and backcountry hunting with the same obsessive drive he had once applied to climbing.
Today, James is not just an avid outdoorsman—he’s a multi-weapon hunter, though he remains deeply rooted in the bowhunting tradition. He spends over 60 days a year in the field, often embarking on grueling backpack hunting expeditions through the rugged terrain of Utah. James’s technical mindset, honed by his career as a chemical engineer, has given him a unique approach to hunting. His background in engineering informs every aspect of his hunting techniques, from analyzing arrow tolerances to developing methods of aiming that most hunters have never even considered.
James’s detailed, scientific approach to bowhunting has made him a respected voice in the hunting community. As a contributing editor for Western Hunter magazine, he shares his insights on everything from archery gear to maximizing bowhunting forgiveness. His ability to break down complex techniques and equipment into practical advice has earned him a devoted following among hunters looking to elevate their skills.
But James’s story isn’t just about technical expertise—it’s about perseverance and a deep connection to the outdoors. Whether he’s guiding his two sons through their first hunts or pushing his own limits on grueling backpack hunts, James embodies the adventurous spirit that Really Right Stuff celebrates. His love for the wilderness, combined with his relentless drive to improve, mirrors the values we hold in creating gear that enhances every outdoor pursuit.
