2014 Life Photo Contest Results

We’re excited to announce the winners of our latest contest: the 2014 Life Photo Contest!

We once again teamed up with our good friends at SmugMug® and Google® to offer some outstanding prizes! As always the selection process was a long and tough one, with so many amazing images submitted from all around the world. This was the first of our photo contests to be open to the public, and we were excited to see what you could come up with. We received hundreds of impressive submissions, and the contest gallery page can be seen here.

Congratulations to all the entrants – we’re very proud to provide the support tools you use for creating such wonderful art. As before, our judging panel went through round after rigorous round of blind review (images only, no names) of the hundreds of submissions, narrowing the selection down to our handful of finalists.

The Winner of the 2014 Life Photo Contest is:

Mike Mezeul II with “Insignificant”

Location:
Wyoming, USA
Camera:
Nikon D800
Nikon 14-24mm/f2.8
Settings:

ISO 50

This image stood out to us with its combination of the raw power of nature brought into scale perspective with humanity. The title certainly gives a great interpretation of this, but there are so many personal feelings to be drawn from this scene and that truly impressed us. For his winning efforts, Mike will be awarded a world-class TVC-33 Versa Carbon-Fiber Tripod Package! Outstanding work Mike!

Our 2nd Place Winner is:

John Glen Weaver with “Sand Dweller”

Location:
Namib Desert, Namibia
Camera:
Nikon D4
Nikon 200-400mm/f4G
Settings:

ISO 640
f/5.6

“If you zoom in just above this oryx there’s a skeleton and horns of a dead oryx that didn’t make it to the river for water and died of thrust in the Namib desert. You can see it mummified in the sand. That skeleton juxtaposed with the live oryx does certainly show “life” and the battle between life and death.” – John Glen Weaver

An amazing story of the cycle and endurance of life told by a single image. Congratulations John! His 2nd Place prize is a 1-year membership to SmugMug®, which he can use to build a stunning photography website of his own.

SmugMug® offers ultra-customizable designs, tons of options for commercialization and sharing your beautiful work, and best of all offers amazing service and support 24/7. They truly have something for everyone! You can try SmugMug® with a 14-day free trial here.
